Short answer: you do not need ten steps. Most people get what a Korean skincare routine is famous for (hydrated, comfortable, well-protected skin) from four to six products: cleanse, hydrate, treat, moisturise, and SPF in the morning. This guide shows which steps to keep, which to drop, and in what order to layer what remains.

What "Korean skincare routine" actually means
Behind the famous ten steps is a simple philosophy: hydrate, protect, be consistent, and layer thin textures before thick ones. The routine grew around building hydration in small layers and preventing damage (mainly with daily sun protection) instead of correcting it later. The number of steps was never the point. The layering logic was.
The classic ten steps at a glance
| # | Step | What it does | Keep or skip? |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Oil cleanser | Removes sunscreen and makeup | Keep in the evening if you wear SPF or makeup |
| 2 | Water-based cleanser | Cleans skin | Keep |
| 3 | Exfoliator | Removes dead skin | Optional, 1–3 times a week at most |
| 4 | Toner | Preps and rehydrates | Optional; overlaps with the essence and serum |
| 5 | Essence | Light hydration | Optional if you use a hydrating serum |
| 6 | Serum / ampoule | Targeted treatment | Keep (this is where actives live) |
| 7 | Sheet mask | Extra hydration | Occasional treat |
| 8 | Eye cream | Delicate-area moisture | Optional; a good moisturiser can do this |
| 9 | Moisturiser | Seals everything in | Keep |
| 10 | SPF | Prevents sun damage | Keep, every morning |
Several popular guides admit that most people who follow this routine day to day use only some of these steps. The ones that consistently earn their place are cleanse, serum, moisturise and SPF.
The simplified routine: morning
- Cleanse. Gentle, water-based.
- Vitamin C (optional but useful). Deep Vita C Capsule Serum is a single-dose capsule, so the formula never oxidises in a bottle. It goes on first, on clean, fully dry skin.
- Hydrate on damp skin. Hyaluronic Multi Peptide Serum (three molecular weights of hyaluronic acid) or Ultra Light PDRN Peptide Serum.
- Moisturise.
- SPF. Vitamin C works under sunscreen, not instead of it.
The simplified routine: evening
- Cleanse. Add an oil cleanser first only if you wore sunscreen or makeup.
- Treat. Pick the serum for your skin's mood: Niacinamide Barrier Drops on reactive days, or Ultra Light for daily use.
- Overnight step. NAD+ EGF Firming Serum is built for the evening and pairs with Ultra Light.
- Moisturise.
That is four or five products, ten minutes, and nothing wasted.
Layering rules that stop you wasting product
- Thin to thick. Water-based serums first, richer formulas after.
- Hyaluronic acid needs water. Apply it to damp skin so it has something to hold on to.
- Vitamin C is a morning step, before SPF.
- Change one thing at a time. Add a new product, wait a few weeks, then judge.
Why concentration matters
Two serums can both "contain niacinamide" and behave very differently. The percentage is what tells you what you are using. We print ours: 3% niacinamide in Niacinamide Barrier Drops, chosen to work without the tingling some people notice at higher strengths, and 1% PDRN in Ultra Light. When a brand will not tell you the number, ask why.
How to start without overwhelming your skin
Switching everything at once is the fastest way to irritate skin and the hardest way to learn what works. A gentler approach:
- Week 1–2: cleanse, moisturise and SPF only. Get those three consistent.
- Week 3: add one serum, in the evening, using it every other night at first.
- Week 5: if your skin is calm, move to nightly use. Only then add a morning serum.
- Any time: if you notice stinging, redness or tightness that does not settle, stop the newest product and go back a step.
Seasons and climate
- Dry, cold or air-conditioned environments: lean on hydration. Apply hyaluronic acid to damp skin and seal it with a moisturiser.
- Hot, humid weather: a lighter serum and a gel-type moisturiser are often enough. Never skip SPF.
- Summer or higher sun exposure: keep vitamin C in the morning, under sunscreen, and reapply SPF through the day.
- Winter, when skin feels reactive: simplify. Barrier-supporting steps matter more than adding actives.
Adjust for your skin
| Your skin | Start with |
|---|---|
| Oily or combination | Ultra Light PDRN Peptide Serum |
| Dehydrated or dry, or a dry climate | Hyaluronic Multi Peptide Serum |
| Redness-prone or reactive | Niacinamide Barrier Drops |
| Wanting an evening, firmer-looking step | NAD+ EGF Firming Serum |
| Wanting brighter-looking tone | Deep Vita C Capsule Serum (mornings) |
Common mistakes
- Too many actives at once. More steps do not mean better results; they make it impossible to tell what is working or what is irritating.
- Skipping SPF. A perfect routine is undone by daily sun exposure. If you keep only one step, keep this one.
- Over-exfoliating. Once or twice a week is plenty for most skin. If skin feels tight, shiny or stings, cut back.
- Putting hyaluronic acid on dry skin. It needs water to hold on to, so apply it to damp skin.
- Judging too early. Give a new product several weeks unless it irritates you.
- Buying by hype. Look for the percentage of the active, not just its name on the front of the bottle.
Frequently asked questions
Do people in Korea really do ten steps every day? Many guides say most do not. A consistent short routine beats an elaborate one you skip.
Is a five-step routine enough? For most healthy skin, yes: cleanse, treat, moisturise, and SPF in the morning.
Niacinamide or vitamin C first? Vitamin C is a morning step; niacinamide works morning or evening. If you use both in the morning, vitamin C goes on first, on dry skin.
How long before I see a difference? Judge over several weeks of consistent use, not days.
Are these products actually made in Korea? Yes, every LAVOÙE serum is made in Korea and comes in a single 30ml size.
